The travel landscape in 2026 is being defined by a growing demand for authentic experiences, milestone celebrations, and culinary discoveries. According to American Express Travel, travelers are increasingly intentional in planning their journeys, prioritizing meaningful moments and experiences that go beyond mere geographic movement. This article explores the main trends set to redefine travel this year, highlighting the value placed on hands-on experiences, local stories, and cuisine as decisive factors in choosing destinations.

The first trend, known as “Miles on Milestones,” shows how travelers are turning important life events into extended travel opportunities. Birthdays, weddings, and family celebrations are prompting trips that go beyond the main event, with 82% of travelers reporting that they add extra days to explore the destination independently. This approach reflects a clear desire to connect personal milestones with unique cultural and recreational experiences, reinforcing the idea that travel is about the journey, not just the destination.

At the same time, the “Sight-Doing” trend reveals a shift in tourist behavior, as travelers increasingly seek hands-on activities rather than passive sightseeing. Local workshops, such as musical instrument making in Indonesia or kayaking tours in the Philippines, are popular among millennials and Generation Z, nearly 80% of whom express interest in these experiences. This preference highlights the value of active learning, where skills acquired during a trip outweigh the appeal of material souvenirs and create lasting memories.

Curiosity about local stories is also gaining prominence through the trend called “Lore Chasing.” Travelers want to explore hidden narratives, lesser-known historical sites, and unconventional accommodations, such as luxury trains or heritage buildings converted into hotels. More than 90% of millennials and Generation Z show interest in venturing off the beaten path, seeking experiences that challenge comfort zones and provide fresh perspectives on local culture. This trend indicates growing sophistication in tourism, where the value of travel is measured by authenticity and the depth of cultural connection.

Additionally, gastronomy is taking a central role in travel planning for 2026, reflected in the trend known as “Snackpacking.” The desire for local flavors and casual culinary experiences, such as street food, bakeries, and markets, is redefining culinary tourism. About two-thirds of travelers prioritize trying foods unavailable in their home countries, making cuisine a decisive factor in destination and activity choices. This trend also reinforces the idea that travel is a full sensory experience, where taste is as important as scenery or architecture.

These trends demonstrate that tourism in 2026 is no longer just about visiting places but about creating meaningful and memorable experiences. Planning trips around personal milestones, learning new skills, exploring local stories, and tasting local flavors represents a cultural shift in how tourists engage with the world. For operators, destinations, and brands, understanding these preferences is essential to offer experiences that meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning and connected audience.

By embracing these practices, travelers ensure that their journeys are not only moments of leisure but also opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection, and sensory pleasure. The trend points toward more conscious, intentional, and diverse tourism, where every travel choice translates into unique experiences that remain in memory. The year 2026 stands out as a milestone in the evolution of travel, driven by the desire for deep experiences, meaningful celebrations, and authentic discoveries.
