How China is responding to Trump amid tariff threats and TikTok bans

In recent years, relations between the United States and China have been at a high point, especially over trade policy and cybersecurity issues. In particular, former President Donald Trump was a key figure in the disputes, imposing heavy tariffs on Chinese products and threatening even more drastic measures, such as banning TikTok in the US. This context has generated intense reactions from China, which has taken a firm stance in defense of its economic and technological interests. In this article, we will analyze how China is responding to Trump, taking into account the impact of tariff threats and the possible ban on TikTok.

China’s first major response to the Trump administration was in the area of tariffs. During his term, Trump implemented a series of tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese products, with the aim of reducing the US trade deficit and pressuring China to change its trade practices. In response, China retaliated with tariffs of its own on American products, affecting several sectors, such as agriculture and technology. This tariff game has further heightened tensions between the two powers, but it has also reflected China’s determination not to bow to US pressure. The immediate impact of the tariffs has been a slowdown in exports and a series of economic hardships for both countries.

In addition to the tariffs, another crucial factor that has intensified tense relations has been the issue of TikTok. In 2020, Trump threatened to ban the app, accusing it of being a threat to US national security for allegedly allowing the Chinese government to access sensitive data of American users. China, for its part, has denied any allegations of espionage and has tried to protect TikTok as a strategic asset, both from an economic and cultural perspective. China’s response has included a series of official statements and legal measures to prevent the app from being banned, demonstrating its resistance to attempts at external interference in its technology companies.

The TikTok issue is emblematic of a broader strategy by China to protect its technology companies from external pressure. China has invested heavily in developing its technology industry in recent years, with companies such as Huawei, Baidu and Tencent becoming global leaders. The protection of its tech giants is not limited to responding to Trump’s threats, but is also part of a larger effort to ensure that Chinese companies can compete in an increasingly polarized global market. In this sense, TikTok has become not only a successful app, but also a symbol of China’s potential for innovation and growth in the digital sector.

However, China has not limited itself to responding only in the economic and trade arenas. The Chinese government has also adopted a diplomatic stance to deal with Trump’s threats. This has included a continued effort to strengthen its alliances with other global powers and deepen its presence in international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, China has sought to strengthen its leverage over developing countries by offering loans and investing in infrastructure projects, particularly in Africa and Asia, as part of its “Belt and Road” initiative. The idea behind this strategy was to create an international support network that would help reduce US pressure on China.

In the area of cybersecurity, China has also stepped up its defenses. The Chinese government has implemented a series of laws and regulations aimed at protecting its data and technological systems from external threats. This includes strict control over social media platforms such as TikTok, which are seen not only as a tool for entertainment but also as a means of collecting and disseminating information. For China, maintaining control over its digital platforms also means ensuring sovereignty over its own data networks, which has become a point of contention with the United States.

In addition, the Chinese government’s stance on Trump’s sanctions and bans also reflects an attempt to assert its political and economic independence on the global stage. China has not only sought new sources of economic growth, but has also invested in strategies for technological self-sufficiency. Rather than bowing to external pressures, such as the TikTok ban, the Chinese government is trying to establish its own norms and standards in the global market, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and 5G. This move aims to reduce China’s dependence on Western technologies, particularly from the United States.

The impact of Trump’s policies on China can also be seen in terms of internal innovation. Faced with external threats, the country has accelerated its digital transformation, with an increasing focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). China realized that by strengthening its internal technological capabilities, it could better protect itself from external threats, such as the proposed ban on TikTok. China’s response to Trump was therefore not simply an economic retaliation, but also a strategic move to build a solid foundation of innovation and self-reliance.

In short, China has responded in a multifaceted manner to the tariff threats and the possible ban on TikTok, with a combination of economic, diplomatic and technological strategies. The Chinese government’s firm stance reflects its intention to protect its interests and assert its position on the global stage, even in the face of pressure from figures such as Donald Trump. Although tensions between the two countries continue, China has shown resilience, seeking alternatives to minimize the impacts of American policies and thus ensuring the continuity of its economic and technological growth.
