Before a move, it’s common to realize how many items accumulate over time. JM Mudanças always recommends doing a complete sorting before packing boxes. Separating what will be donated or discarded reduces the volume to be transported, saves time, and contributes to a more mindful move.

Start with rarely used clothes and shoes

The wardrobe is usually the easiest place to begin sorting. Set aside items that haven’t been worn for over a year, clothes that no longer fit, or that don’t match your current style. The same applies to tight, worn-out shoes or those forgotten at the back of the closet.

Planning a move gets easier when Jm Mudanças guides you on what to set aside for donation and what truly needs disposal before packing begins.

Items in good condition can be donated. Torn, stained, or unusable clothing should be sent for textile disposal or recycling, when available.

Assess furniture and decorative items

A move is the ideal moment to rethink what truly makes sense to take to the new space. Broken furniture, very old pieces, or items that don’t suit the new environment can be discarded or donated.

Decorative items also deserve attention. Frames, ornaments, and objects accumulated over the years may no longer be useful. Keep what still has functional or sentimental value and discard the rest.

Sort kitchen utensils and appliances

Kitchens tend to concentrate many duplicate or unused items. Damaged pots, broken utensils, containers without lids, and appliances that don’t work should be removed from the list of items to transport.

Old or faulty appliances can be taken to proper disposal points. If they’re in good condition, donating them can help others and free up space for the move.

Organize papers, books, and personal items

Old documents, accumulated magazines, and books that will no longer be used can also be sorted. Papers without value should go to recycling. Books in good condition can be donated to libraries, schools, or social projects.

Personal items, keepsakes, and sentimental objects should be evaluated calmly. Take only what truly has meaning and usefulness in the new home.

Tips to make sorting easier

To speed up the process, use three categories: donate, discard, and take. Separate boxes or bags for each group. This visual organization helps you make decisions more quickly.

It’s also important to check collection points in your area. Many neighborhoods have drop-off locations for electronics, furniture, and recyclable materials. This ensures a more sustainable and organized move.

By separating what will be donated or discarded before moving, you reduce costs, save time, and start the new phase with more lightness and space.
